📢 Phasing Out Paper TRBs – The New Digital eTRB is Here

From the 2025/26 academic year, traditional paper Training Record Books (TRBs) will begin to be phased out and replaced by a new, cloud-based digital app — the eTRB.
Developed by the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), with input from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), this innovative platform represents a major step forward in modernising UK seafarer and cadet training.
Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 What’s Changing:
- Paper TRBs will no longer be issued for cadets working towards an MCA Certificate of Competency (CoC) using a reduced sea time route.
- Experienced seafarers taking their first CoC will adopt the eTRB from the 2026/27 academic year.
🔹 What This Means for You:
- Digital Convenience: Record tasks, upload photos and videos, store certificates, and sync your progress when back online.
- Better Oversight: Training companies and employers can track your progress in real-time, helping you stay on course.
- Clear Guidance: Each section includes updated, task-specific instructions to make completing your training more straightforward.
- Compliance & Security: Your data will be stored securely, meeting industry and data protection standards.
The eTRB app will be available via the App Store and Google Play, giving you access on smartphones and tablets — even offline at sea.
At Seamariner, we will soon be ready to accept and manage these digital records as part of our candidate onboarding and crew management processes. We encourage all cadets and candidates to prepare for this transition and keep their digital records up to date to ensure smooth recruitment and certification processes.
