Seamariner Second Officer Commended for Life-Saving Actions Onboard

At Seamariner, we take immense pride in the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the seafarers we represent. Recently, one of our Second Officers displayed exceptional courage and composure during a critical onboard medical emergency.

Whilst nearing the end of cargo loading operations, an Able Seaman on a different deck called for medical assistance. It was soon after reported as a suspected heart attack. Without hesitation, Second Officer Bethany Wilkinson handed over the continuation of loading operations to the cargo-man and proceeded to the scene to assist.

Upon arrival, the casualty was found unresponsive on deck. After confirming no pulse or breathing, Bethany immediately began CPR and the vessel’s defibrillator, was promptly brought by the ship’s first aid team.

Following several cycles of CPR, the defibrillator advised to continue compressions until a pulse was detected. Bethany 2nd Officer maintained resuscitation efforts, ultimately restoring a pulse before administering oxygen and placing the casualty into the recovery position. The ship’s bridge arranged for immediate medical evacuation, and the patient was transferred safely to hospital upon arrival of emergency services.

Thanks to the swift actions, leadership, and training of the Second Officer and crew, the incident was handled with professionalism and care—ultimately saving a passengers life.

This event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety training and readiness at sea. Seamariner extends its sincere appreciation to Bethany Wilkinson and the ship’s crew for their outstanding teamwork and calm response in the face of an emergency.

A true example of professionalism, quick thinking, and heroism onboard.
