Seamariner warns seafarers about recruitment and impersonation scams.
Seamariner Limited is urging seafarers to remain vigilant following a number of scams targeting members of the maritime community, including fraudulent recruitment approaches and attempts to impersonate Seamariner staff.
Scammers may use the names, logos, vacancies or identities of genuine shipping companies and recruitment agencies to appear legitimate. In a recent incident, an individual impersonated Seamariner’s Managing Director and contacted a seafarer requesting that they purchase vouchers on their behalf.
Seafarers should be particularly cautious of:
Requests for recruitment, application, placement, training or certification fees.
Requests to purchase vouchers, gift cards or other items on behalf of someone claiming to represent a company.
Messages claiming to come from senior managers, company directors or recruiters.
Pressure to act quickly or keep a request confidential.
Requests to transfer money to individuals or unfamiliar accounts.
Job offers made without an appropriate recruitment or interview process.
Requests for passports, certificates, bank details or other sensitive information.
Seamariner would like to reaffirm that neither Seamariner nor any other reputable maritime recruitment agency will ask seafarers to make payments, purchase vouchers or provide money in order to secure employment.
Seafarers should independently verify any unusual request, particularly where money, vouchers or sensitive personal information are involved, using established contact details for the organisation rather than relying solely on the details provided in the message.
We encourage all seafarers to remain alert and share this warning with colleagues and fellow seafarers to help prevent others from falling victim to recruitment and impersonation scams.
